PROJECT

Reaching Every Child with Immunization Services

In the heart of the Busoga Region, a quiet but powerful transformation is taking place. Between June and November 2025, the Busoga Awareness and Community Health Initiative (BACHI) launched a strategic offensive against one of public health’s toughest challenges: reaching "zero-dose" children.

Project cost: UGX 281,430,033

AREAS OF IMPLEMENTATION

The project focuses on the Busoga Region, specifically targeting five districts characterized by high clusters of zero-dose children:

  • Districts: Jinja City, Jinja District, Mayuge, Bugiri, and Namayingo.
  • Scope: Activities are implemented at both district headquarters and sub-county levels to ensure grassroots penetration.
  • Field Presence: Four dedicated Project Officers are stationed across these districts to coordinate localized interventions.

KEY ACHIEVEMENTS (JUNE – NOV 2025)

BACHI has successfully met 100% of its planned process targets for the implementation period:

  • Governance & Entry: Completed 5 district-level entry meetings and 10 quarterly performance reviews at the sub-county level.
  • Community Structure: Oriented 200 VHTs/CHEWs on registration and profiling; established 5 ACSM Committees (Advocacy, Communication, and Social Mobilization).
  • Stakeholder Engagement: * Held 10 engagement meetings on gender-related barriers (achieving a 50:50 male-to-female participation ratio).
    • Conducted 5 orientation meetings for influential cultural and religious leaders.
  • Behavioral Change: Completed 20 targeted dialogues (10 with faith leaders and 10 with vaccination-opposed households) using the “Channels of Hope” model to debunk myths.

IMPACT AND REACH

The project has translated community mobilization into measurable public health gains:

  • Target Reach:
    • Zero-Dose Children (ZDC): Actively targeting and profiling 1,501 children who have never received a vaccine.
    • Under-Immunized Children (UIC): Targeting 2,702 children to complete their immunization schedules.
  • Immunization Coverage Performance:
    • DPT 1 Coverage: Achieved an average of 89.3% across the 5 districts.
    • DPT 3 Coverage: Strong performance reaching 92.0% of the target.
    • MR1 (Measles-Rubella) Coverage: Reached 84.6% cumulative progress.
  • Digital Accuracy: Successfully migrated tracking to the KOBO Collect tool, allowing for real-time identification and follow-up of zero-dose households, ensuring data-driven decision-making.
