PROJECT

HIV/TB Prevention, Care and Access to Treatment

Between Mar 2022 and Sep 2024, the community health in Mayuge District underwent a profound shift. Through the USAID-LSDA-UPMB initiative, BACHI worked tirelessly to bring life-saving HIV and TB services to the doorsteps of those who needed them most.

Program Spotlight: Strengthening Community Response to HIV & TB

The USAID-LSDA-UPMB initiative was a comprehensive project implemented by BACHI to enhance community health responsiveness in the Mayuge District. Spanning from March 2022 to September 2024, this program focused on reducing new HIV infections and mitigating TB transmission through evidence-based, community-led interventions.

Our Geographic Reach

We provided critical health services across 8 rural and peri-urban sub counties, including:

  • Baitambogwe, Imanyiro, and Wairasa.
  • Magamaga, Buwaya, and Bukatube.
  • Kaluba and Mayuge Town Council.

Strategic Approach

We utilized a multi-layered model to ensure no one was left behind:

  • Facility Collaboration: Partnered with Buluba Hospital and local Health Centers (HC IIs) for seamless case identification and treatment initiation.
  • Community Mobilization: Deployed Village Health Teams (VHTs) and peer educators for hotspot mapping and home-based sensitizations.
  • Integrated Service Delivery: Combined HIV testing with TB screening, PrEP initiation, and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) response.
  • Data-Driven Management: Conducted weekly data analysis to ensure high-quality service delivery and adaptive programming.

Cumulative Impact & Results (2022–2024)

  • For Men: We successfully increased health-seeking behaviors among men through targeted VMMC and HIV self-testing initiatives.
  • Economic Empowerment: Both male and female VHTs gained professional training and leadership experience, strengthening the local health workforce.

The Way Forward

Based on our learnings, BACHI is committed to:

  1. Developing tailored interventions to reach male partners and household heads.
  2. Providing further logistical support and formal integration for our community health workers.
  3. Expanding community dialogues to encourage partner disclosure and reduce the fear of seeking care.
