Empowering Women: Success Stories from our Livelihood Projects

In the rural heartlands of Mayuge and Bukomansimbi, the quiet strength of a woman is often the primary engine of community survival. Since 2007, the Baitambogwe Community Healthcare Initiative (BACHI) has operated under a clear conviction, the burden of ill health and the weight of poverty are inextricably linked. We have learned that treating a sick child is a vital intervention, but empowering that child’s mother to afford nutritious food, clean water, and school fees is a long-term cure for the village.
Women in rural Uganda often face a double burden. They contribute significantly to agricultural labor and perform the vast majority of unpaid care work, yet they frequently lack control over household assets and financial decisions. According to research on women’s economic empowerment in Uganda, this economic dependency is a major driver of health vulnerabilities, including higher risks of gender-based violence and barriers to accessing essential maternal care. Our livelihood projects are designed to dismantle these barriers, turning vulnerability into agency.
The Seed of Change: Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs)
The cornerstone of our economic intervention is the Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) model. In areas where formal banks are non-existent or inaccessible, VSLAs provide a safe, community-governed space for women to pool their small savings and access low-interest loans. This home-grown capital allows women to start micro-enterprises without the fear of predatory lending or the need for collateral they do not possess.
The impact of these groups extends far beyond the ledger. When women meet weekly to manage their funds, they also share knowledge on primary healthcare, nutrition, and business management. This social cohesion builds a support network that strengthens the entire village’s resilience against economic shocks. By providing a platform for collective bargaining and resource sharing, VSLAs empower women to move from being beneficiaries to becoming active stakeholders in their local economy.
Success Story: From Subsistence to Sustainability
Consider the story of Sarah, a mother of five in a remote village in Mayuge. For years, Sarah’s family lived on the edge of survival, relying on a small plot of land that barely provided enough maize for their daily meals. When her children fell ill, the cost of transport to a health center often meant choosing between medicine and food.
Through a BACHI-supported livelihood project, Sarah joined a local women’s savings group and received training in climate-smart agriculture. With her first small loan, she purchased high-quality seeds and a small solar-powered irrigation kit. Today, Sarah doesn’t just grow food for her family, she produces a surplus of vegetables that she sells at the local market. The income from her business has allowed her to pay for her children’s education and, crucially, to invest in a family health insurance plan.
The “Multiplier Effect” on Community Health
Empowering women does not just benefit the individual, it creates a multiplier effect that elevates the health and wellbeing of the entire community. Data from the World Bank and other development partners indicates that when women have access to and control over income, they are more likely than men to spend it on their children’s nutrition, healthcare, and education.
In our project areas, we have observed a direct correlation between women’s financial independence and improved child health outcomes. Mothers with their own income are better equipped to provide diverse diets, reducing the rates of stunting and malnutrition. They are also more likely to seek timely medical attention for their families, reducing the three delays that often lead to preventable maternal and infant deaths. Financial agency gives women the voice to participate in household decisions, leading to more equitable and healthy family dynamics.
Strategic Partnerships for Holistic Growth
BACHI’s success in livelihood projects is amplified through our Strategic Partnerships with local government and international organizations. By aligning our economic programs with national frameworks like the Parish Development Model, we ensure our work is integrated into Uganda’s broader development agenda. We also collaborate with partners like GAVI and the Global Fund to ensure that as women’s incomes grow, their access to life-saving vaccines and HIV services grows with them.
Our commitment to Accountability and Transparency ensures that every grant or loan provided is used effectively to create sustainable change. We don’t just provide capital, we provide the mentorship and technical skills needed to make that capital grow. This approach ensures that the transformation we witness in our villages is not a temporary relief but a permanent shift toward prosperity.
A Vision for an Empowered Uganda
The transformation of a village begins with the empowerment of its women. When a woman is financially independent, she is no longer a burden to the state or her community, she is a leader, an entrepreneur, and a protector of her family’s health. At BACHI, we are proud to stand alongside these resilient women as they rewrite the future of rural Uganda.
We believe that a healthy and empowered community is the only foundation for true national growth. As we continue to innovate and expand our livelihood projects, we invite our global partners and local supporters to witness the power of a woman with a plan and a community that has her back. The success stories from Mayuge and Bukomansimbi are proof that when you invest in a woman, you invest in a nation.
